Labour of Love
by Angela Harkless

The cold and snowy February 14th night could not dampen the warm enthusiasm of more than 800 guests at the Art Institute of Chicago’s “Celebrating a Labour of Love” Gala.

The gala exalted the opening of the “A Century of Collecting African American Art in the Art Institute of Chicago” exhibition.
Valentine’s Day was the superb backdrop for a romantic and enchanting evening for gala attendants. The ritual champagne cocktail reception commenced the festivities as guests
Susie Kealy, Amainyea Payne and Joan Gray
dined on fine cuisine, listened to live jazz music and previewed the exhibition.

After a sumptuous buffet dinner, guests moved to the Rubloff Auditorium for a special concert performance by three-time grammy artist the Ramsey Lewis Trio.
The evening culminated with a cabaret in the Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room and featured dessert and dancing to the sounds of The Legends of Jazz Ensemble. The gala not only raised funds to support African American cultural programs at the Art Institute, it also helps promote the exhibition, which will be on display through May 16, 2003.
